Terény · The Heart of the Hungarian Tuscany

An art retreat among the gentle hills of the Cserhát

A whole week where nothing rushes you — only creation, deep focus, and true renewal

Step away from the constant noise and into a breathtaking countryside retreat, where time finally slows down. Paint in silence and nature, deepen your skills with professional guidance, reconnect with yourself, and create freely — with full accommodation, all materials provided, and space to truly breathe.

If you feel that the desire to create is there, but everyday noise leaves no space, time, or guidance to truly unfold

There is no silence or real space for deep, focused creation

The rhythm of everyday life, constant expectations, and ongoing noise weaken the inner focus needed for painting. Even when the desire to create is strong, it’s hard to slow down enough to be fully present in the process.

Uncertainty in technique and artistic progress

You paint and experiment, yet often feel stuck. You may question whether you’re using oil or acrylic correctly, how to truly observe nature, and miss clear professional guidance to help you move forward with confidence.

Inspiration fades in familiar, everyday surroundings

The same spaces and routines make it difficult to see with fresh eyes. Without the closeness of nature, an inspiring environment, and like-minded creators, motivation and enthusiasm gradually begin to fade.

This isn’t happening because you lack talent or commitment. You’re simply trying to create in the wrong place and under the wrong conditions. There is a space where silence supports you, nature teaches you, and professional guidance brings clarity.

Keep reading to discover how creating can feel liberating again — the solution awaits just below.

One space and one week where every condition is in place for creation to become natural, joyful, and truly liberating again

The Summer Art Retreat invites you into a quiet, carefully chosen rural environment with no rush, no noise, and no pressure to perform. The calm of Terény and the closeness of nature helps you slow down, deepen your focus, and reconnect with your creative process.
Throughout the week, personal professional guidance from internationally recognised painter and tutor Lóránt Ágoston supports your artistic development. Whether you work with oil or acrylic, beginner or advanced, you receive clear direction, feedback, and practical insight that leads to real progress.
Plein air painting in an inspiring natural setting, combined with a small group of like-minded creators, offers a fresh perspective. This environment helps you break out of routine, reignite inspiration, and return home creatively recharged.

Imagine a week where your creativity flows freely, every brushstroke guided by inspiration and nature’s beauty

Imagine a future where your ideas come alive on canvas, surrounded by the rolling hills of the Hungarian Tuscany.

In a small group, under the guidance of Lóránt Ágoston, you’ll dive into oil painting techniques, observing nature closely and expressing your vision with confidence.

The retreat is a space to let your imagination run, free from distractions and deadlines, where each day brings new discoveries and artistic growth.

By the end of the week, you’ll leave with a collection of artworks and a renewed sense of creative purpose that stays with you long after the retreat ends.

Everything you need to know about the details,
conditions, and services of the summer art retreat

The Summer Art Retreat is a 7-day, 6-night immersive experience where each participant is accommodated in a private room, ensuring personal space, comfort, and uninterrupted rest. Participants are accommodated in rooms located in traditional folk buildings, furnished with restored original furniture.

The participation fee includes full board: daily meals are prepared by local master chefs with special attention to vegetarian, vegan, and various dietary sensitivities and individual needs.

The professional program is led by internationally recognised painter and tutor Lóránt Ágoston and takes place in small groups, offering daily consultations, personalized technical guidance, and continuous professional feedback.

In consideration of the summer heat, plein air painting sessions are scheduled for early mornings and late afternoons, when temperatures and light conditions are optimal for outdoor work.

During the daytime, painting continues in a purpose-adapted shady barn, where fresh air flows freely, providing a calm and inspiring environment for practicing the alla prima painting technique.

The retreat is open to both beginners and advanced painters; instruction is tailored to individual skill levels, covering oil and acrylic painting techniques, nature observation, and the development of independent visual thinking.

Participation includes all art materials and equipment, unlimited tea, coffee, and non-alcoholic drinks, round-trip airport transfers, organized local excursions, and bicycles for exploring the surrounding countryside, plus many small yet meaningful elements designed to support ease, comfort, and inspiration — so you can focus entirely on creation and presence.

A personal message from the artist and tutor

Hi! I’m Lóránt Ágoston, a painter, art tutor and certified environmentalist. I’ve been teaching visual art classes in University and schools and tutoring art camps and workshops for 30 years, and this is my first art retreat designed exclusively for women!

I am here to make sure this week is all about your personal journey.

The idea didn’t come from me alone: my partner, Emese, and the stories of her female friends showed me how important it is for women to have a special space for creating, relaxing, and reconnecting with themselves. Many women want to paint, but everyday life drains their energy. This retreat gives you the chance to reconnect with your inner creative voice, and enjoy painting in a safe, supportive space.

The retreat takes place in Terény, Nógrád County, in an authentic Palóc-style setting, where nature and traditione provide the perfect backdrop for inspiration and tranquility. We work in internationally small groups-a minimum of 6 and maximum of 10 participants-ensuring an intimate atmosphere and the space for everyone to grow at their own pace.

This limited group size allows us to offer continuous, on-demand one-on-one professional support and guidance, so you’ll always feel supported, and encouraged throughout your creative journey.

Our team, made up of family and close friends, is professionally skilled and personally supportive. In a caring, nurturing environment, your painting deepens and your inner balance is restored. The Summer Art Retreat is a week to arrive at yourself and feel truly centered, a week where you are the center, and a week filled with the joy of creating.

Yes, the area is safe, quiet, and well suited for solo travelers, including women arriving on their own.

Terény, where the retreat takes place, is a small, peaceful village with friendly, welcoming residents. The accommodation is located within the village as a separate, self‑contained unit made up of several houses, providing both privacy and a sense of security. The surroundings are calm and natural, with forests and open fields, and no busy traffic or nightlife.

Many guests appreciate the village’s slow pace, tranquility, and strong sense of community, which makes it especially comfortable for participants seeking a relaxed and safe environment.

That said, we strongly recommend that all participants take out comprehensive travel insurance. Your insurance should cover trip cancellation or interruption, illness, accidents, medical expenses, and loss or delay of baggage, for your own peace of mind.

The retreat focuses on plein air painting and daily observation, mainly working with acrylics in small, transportable formats. There is no fixed theme or required technique — you are free to experiment and work at your own pace.

Some participants prefer structured guidance from the basics, while others work more independently. Both are welcome. I speak with everyone in advance so the program and support can be adapted to individual needs. Oil painting is also possible with prior arrangement.

Yes.

All artworks are created in easy-to-transport sizes, including finished paintings and sketches. The retreat ends with a relaxed closing exhibition evening, where everyone can share their work in a celebratory atmosphere — with a few special surprises along the way.

Yes — plenty.

All activities are optional, and the retreat is designed to leave generous time for focused, uninterrupted creative work. Shared programs are thoughtfully balanced so guests don’t feel rushed or overloaded.

We also plan a longer excursion to Hollókő, a UNESCO World Heritage village, including sketching on location and a shared lunch — a highlight we warmly recommend. Beyond that, there is ample free time for painting, rest, conversation, and personal consultations.

The workshop is led by Ágoston Lóránt, artist and art educator with over 30 years of experience.

Personal, one-to-one guidance is available throughout the retreat, always tailored to your preferences — whether you want close mentoring, occasional feedback, or space to work independently with gentle support when needed.
